Taliesin West Video Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West
Taliesin West in northeast Scottsdale is ranked one of the world’s greatest architectural treasures. Designed by visionary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Taliesin West was a bold new concept for desert living.

The forms of the surrounding landscape are expressed in the structures: The hill behind is reflected in the slope of the roofs, and the vast desert below finds expression in the open and spacious terraces. Wright and his apprentices gathered rocks from the desert floor and sand from the washes to build these dramatic structures. Sloping stone walls topped with translucent roofs supported by deep, exposed beams are the dominant architectural theme.

Integrating indoor and outdoor spaces, the complex is arranged as a landscape meant to be walked through. As in a Japanese stroll garden, you turn repeatedly—your eye drawn to the “borrowed” view of distant landmarks. Taliesin West was Wright’s personal winter home, studio and architectural campus for more than 20 years.

The Garden Room was and is the show piece of Taliesin West. Here visitors also see Wright-designed furniture and decorative objects collected by the architect. A large fireplace dominates the far end of the 56-foot-long room. Adjoining the Garden Room are the private rooms used by Wright and his wife.

Other principal indoor spaces include the Cabaret Theater where formal dinners, movie screenings, and lectures are held; the Music Pavilion, used for performances, exhibitions, and social events, and the Fellowship dining room.

Taliesin West Tours
Guided tours of the main complex range from one to three hours long. The site is also available for rental for private evening receptions and dinners. At night, the site assumes a luminous, jewel-like quality, and the “Night Lights on the Desert” tour, offered seasonally, is an enchanting way to see Taliesin West. There are also seasonal guided desert walks, and on Saturdays November through April, students at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture provide in-depth tours of their self-designed and built “desert shelters.”

All tours begin in the Taliesin West gift shop and bookstore where you can purchase books and prints, reproductions of Wright designed decorative objects and furniture, works by Taliesin artists, and attractive souvenirs.
