Slide Rock State Park
If you want some relief from the hot Arizona sun, why not enjoy the ice-cold waters of Slide Rock State Park? The park is like a natural water park right in the middle of the beautiful high desert country near Sedona. Here are three reasons why you should check it out.
1. Mother Nature’s Water Slide
Folks travel all over Arizona in the sunny summertime to throw themselves down man-made water slides, but here is one provided by Mother Nature herself. As Fodor’s Travel says, “There’s pretty much one reason and one reason only to visit Slide Rock State Park, seven miles north of Sedona: to slip down the smooth, red-sandstone water slide and be carried over the surface by a cooling creek into the swimming hole below.”
Of course, there’s more to do here, but the slide is the main attraction. After all, the park is named after it. Slide Rock is a stretch of slippery creek bottom that’s so well suited for the human behind that it’s a wonder some early explorer to the area didn’t cut it out of the rock for us to enjoy.
2. Water Fun in the Sun
However, there actually is much more to Slide Rock State Park than just the Slide Rock. There is a big swimming area of the creek that you can enjoy on a hot Arizona day. There are also various areas where you can jump into the water and at some of these points, it’s as much as ten feet deep.
Of course, if you’d like a more laid-back time lying around in the sun, that’s also an option. There are plenty of shallow areas where you can dip your toes in while the rest of your body soaks up the sun. Bring snacks and soft drinks because you won’t want to leave.
3. Plenty to Explore
If you can tear yourself away from the water for a little while, there is also fantastic scenery to enjoy. The area is full of little trails to explore and the hiking is easy. One trail in particular goes along the ridge overlooking the swimming areas, offering fantastic views of the surrounding scenery. Exploring the area around the creek, you can easily see why it has been used as the setting for a number of Hollywood movies.
Natural Beauty and Water Slide Fun
Slide Rock State Park is a little-known Arizona attraction that even many people in the state don’t know about. It’s located close to Sedona, which makes it a convenient place to spend an afternoon. It also offers something a little different; “water fun” isn’t a term usually associated with Arizona.
As you can probably imagine, Slide Rock State Park is extremely popular with kids. If you plan to visit, bring water shoes because the rocks can get slippery and plenty of sun protection. And come early because this park is popular.
