The park is named after Fool Hollow Lake, a 150-acre lake that offers a feeling of high country seclusion. It’s hard to believe that this lake scenery with its mild temperatures is just a quick drive east of Phoenix, but here it is.

The lake is open all year round. It hardly ever freezes over and there are many things to do at Fool Hollow Lake Recreational Area. It’s open for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, boating and more. The park offers all of the gear you need for rental so that you don’t need to bring your own.

2 | Excellent Lake Fishing

One activity in particular draws visitors from all over the country is Fool Hollow Lake fishing. This is a great place to cast your line and it’s good for all levels. It’s an ideal spot for novice anglers and it’s just right for kids. There are six fishing platforms, two fish cleaning areas and a boat ramp for easy access.

The lake is stocked with a self-sustaining fish population. There is plenty of largemouth and smallmouth bass, sunfish, channel catfish, black crappie, crayfish and more. Throughout the spring and summer, the Arizona Game and Fish Department also stocks the fish with rainbow trout.

3 | Hiking Trails

The lake is nice but if you’d rather hike around it than swim in it, there are plenty of hiking trails at Fool Hollow Lake Recreational Area. One short hiking trail winds 1.5 miles around the lake, making it a quick and easy way to see the beauty of the area. There are also 11 loop trails that offer a total of 103 miles of hiking.

Fool Hollow Lake Recreational Area is great for day trips from Phoenix, it also offers some of the best camping in Arizona. Even though the area is pristine and rugged, the campground is modern and has plenty of facilities. Sites are spacious and it’s an easy walk from all sites to the trailheads. The campground includes a playground for the kids and plenty of ponderosa pines for shade. If you need anything, it’s just a two-mile drive to Show Low.
