Meteor Crater: Experience the Impact

Meteor Crater – the best preserved meteorite impact site on Earth is located in Northern Arizona, east of Flagstaff.

The Crater was created approximately 50,000 years ago when a meteor ended its 500 million year journey through space on a collision course with Earth. Traveling at approximately 26,000 miles per hour, it passed through the Earth’s atmosphere and, in a blinding flash, struck the Earth with an explosive force greater than twenty million tons of TNT. The meteor’s impact left a giant bowl-shaped crater nearly a mile across and more than 550 feet deep. The terrain of Meteor Crater so closely resembles that of the moon NASA made it an official training site for the Apollo astronauts.
